Eco Bags in Supermarkets

Irish supermarkets have been forced by law to charge the public for plastic bags at the checkout. They are not allowed to give them away for free or incorparate their price into the bill.

By doing this platic bag consumption has decreased by upto 60%, this money then goes onto subsidising Eco Bags and making them cheaper. Hopes of a similiar scheme in the UK have been suggested but as yet nothing has been formally proposed.

Supermarkets in this country usually have their own Eco Bags at the checkouts with prices ranging from £0.50p to £1.50 and many offering to replace them free of charge if they become damaged.
